Spreadsheet Compare on Microsoft 365 Business plans
Updated: October 20, 2026
If you looked for Spreadsheet Compare, or the Compare Files button on Excel's Inquire tab, and couldn't find it, your plan probably doesn't include it. Microsoft's own Spreadsheet Compare page says it is only available with Office Professional Plus 2013, 2016 or 2019, or Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (read October 20, 2026). Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium, and Personal and Family, are not on that list. It is a Windows program.
Comparing two versions of a workbook without it
SheetTrack is a free Excel add-in, coming soon to Microsoft AppSource. It works in Excel on Windows and on the web, with any Microsoft 365 plan, and it changes neither workbook.
- Open the newer workbook in Excel and open SheetTrack (Home → SheetTrack).
- On Changes, choose Since → Choose a file…, then pick the older file (.xlsx or .xlsm).
- Changes lists every value and formula that is different, each named by its row and column ("Revenue growth · FY27").
The file is read in SheetTrack on your computer; it is not uploaded or kept. For a workbook in your own OneDrive, Since → Choose a OneDrive version… compares with one of OneDrive's own versions instead, with no download.
How it differs
| Spreadsheet Compare | SheetTrack | |
|---|---|---|
| Plans | Office Professional Plus, Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise | Any Microsoft 365 plan, and Excel on the web |
| Where | A separate Windows program | A pane inside Excel |
| What it compares | Values, formulas, cell formatting and macros, cell by cell | Values, formulas, sheets and named ranges, with inserted rows, sorts and renamed sheets as one line each; not formatting |
| Labels | Cell addresses | Each cell's row and column names |
| History | Two files at a time | Also saved versions with notes, Compare between any two, and Go Back To |
Spreadsheet Compare is the better choice when formatting or macros matter and you have it. SheetTrack is for seeing what changed in a model, in the words of the model.
